Dead Calm

Dead calm by Phillip Noyce

the narrative starts off with the sailors getting off the train. it then goes in to the man seeing a woman in the hospital. it then goes into a flashback of the car accident where the child goes flying through the window screen. however this is not the narrative expected as you expect to see the crash first and then the man coming off the train.but as they did it this way it biulds up the tension as you begin to wonder why it is all quite when he gets of the train as well as this you wonder why she is in hospital.

there is a dolly camera used as it follows the train however at one point it stops and lets all the other characters fly by on the train. this lets us see how happy everybody else is getting off the train apart from the character the camera stops on which it then pans and follow it. there is also the high angle shot where he is talking to the policemen. there is the use of close ups in the opening scene when you see the mothers reaction to the babies death.

the title is in red writing which is typical of the thriller genre. the use of fading used in the car of the sign posts shows the passing of time. this shows how editing is used in the opening of the film.

the scene is also set as there is the use of the sailor suits at the train station showing that they are coming back home for an event like christmas. this makes you feel sorry for the family in the accident as it near to a happy time. the doctors uniform also set the scene as it allows you to see the change in scenary and the change of time and events. you are also made nervous as before the accident it is raining and it is at night therefore your nervous of what could be around the corner and if there will be anything going to happen.

there is not a lot of dialogue in the opening sequence therefore it biulds tension as you wonder what is going on and what is going through the characters minds. the fact that she is singing the lullaby to the baby before it dies this gives you false sense of security.

Mise-en-scene

i will use the same images i used before on gone in sixty seconds.

this scene you have an image of all the characters involved in the conversation.

the setting of the scene, within the garage just allows you to understand that there are cars involved in the story line. as well as this there is only natural lighting used in this image, coming from behind the characters sat down, this allows you to see the hole of the garage and the characters within.

This second image is a good example of the use of light. the fact that the only light that is in the image is coming from the cars that are being stolen. this brings attention to those cars as well as this the other cars are in complete darkness therefore there is nothing to distrct you from the central cars which are the focus of this image.

Also the red car stands out as it is the only car that has any bright colour in this scene, your attention is therefore drawn to this central car.

These are the two main characters, they show the sexual tention between each other very well as well as this they show the air of untouchableness (if thats even a word) about them as they are doing something they should not be but are still calm.
Costume- they are both in black leather as they are tilling the car and its night therefore they will not be seen as easy, however it is also shown to have a casuaal look to it therefore it is not made obvious that they are wearing black for a purpose.

Music Video

incase the link doesnt work.
this is the video for linkin paprk featuring jay-z numb/encore

the start of this video is a close up of the venue they are playing which pans out to see the sign, it then cuts to a extreme close up of the techno keyboard. this is a srate cut as there are no affects added it then has another strate cut to the singer. it then cuts to a view of the audience, which then changes back to the singer however instead of it being a mid-shot it is a long shot of the hole stage.
most of the shots in this video are of the band playing and the singers on stage.
however there is a good high angled shot looking down at the audience which shows the size of the venue they are playing in.
there is also the strate cuts to the blake and white scenes which show the events before the live show. the change in colour allows you to see the change in time.
there is also a lot of ooming out used in the video to show a broader picture.
it is mainly mid shots, long shots and close ups however there is also the POV shot from the audience and the high angled shot to get different views of the performance.

image below
this is an image of the last car juming over the road block on the bridge, this is an action shot that is taken at the same height as the car as it enables you to see the danger of what is happening but at the same time you are still able to see the background moving as the car is in the front of the image. the golden mean is used in this image as the car is the main point within the image.

this is a close up of the last car that is stolen within the movie, the close up shows the car off as well as this it lets you see the character behind the steering wheel. this shows the importance of the final car as it is close up and allows you to see the detail on the car.image below

this is a long shot of some of the stolen cars leaving a garage. the main point of the image is the red car in the centre of the screen as they have used the rule of thirds as well as this it looks as if it is the only car in colour and the only car that has its light ons,

Image below

this is a close up from the film gone in sixty seconds. this is scene whilst they are stealing a car. it is angled at the same height as the action, this makes you feel equal to the characters involved. this scene use the rule of thirds as all the focus is on the two characters within the centre of the image.

his image is a mid long shot as you can see most of the bodys, it is at the same height as the characters again. it is like you are watching the conversation go on in front of you which makes you feel like you are there with them. this scene also use the rule of thirds as the emphasize is on the two men in the middle of the screen as they are they ones talking.
