the narrative starts off with the sailors getting off the train. it then goes in to the man seeing a woman in the hospital. it then goes into a flashback of the car accident where the child goes flying through the window screen. however this is not the narrative expected as you expect to see the crash first and then the man coming off the train.but as they did it this way it biulds up the tension as you begin to wonder why it is all quite when he gets of the train as well as this you wonder why she is in hospital.
there is a dolly camera used as it follows the train however at one point it stops and lets all the other characters fly by on the train. this lets us see how happy everybody else is getting off the train apart from the character the camera stops on which it then pans and follow it. there is also the high angle shot where he is talking to the policemen. there is the use of close ups in the opening scene when you see the mothers reaction to the babies death.
the title is in red writing which is typical of the thriller genre. the use of fading used in the car of the sign posts shows the passing of time. this shows how editing is used in the opening of the film.
the scene is also set as there is the use of the sailor suits at the train station showing that they are coming back home for an event like christmas. this makes you feel sorry for the family in the accident as it near to a happy time. the doctors uniform also set the scene as it allows you to see the change in scenary and the change of time and events. you are also made nervous as before the accident it is raining and it is at night therefore your nervous of what could be around the corner and if there will be anything going to happen.
there is not a lot of dialogue in the opening sequence therefore it biulds tension as you wonder what is going on and what is going through the characters minds. the fact that she is singing the lullaby to the baby before it dies this gives you false sense of security.
